After going through the gate inspections to get onto the Fort, students visited Cape Henry Lighthouse. The students learned that this was the first lighthouse built by the U.S. Government in 1792. The group was able to climb to the top of the lighthouse and see spectacular views of the surrounding area and the Atlantic Ocean. The students were able to then visit the gift shop where they learned about the “Bucket Brigade.” The Bucket Brigade is a fund raising project to raise funds to repair the base of this historic lighthouse. The tour guide also pointed out the approximate area where the first settlers landed in Virginia in 1607 before proceeding to Jamestown. The group then visited the nearby the National Society Daughters of the American Colonists granite cross erected in 1935 to commemorate this historic occasion.
